Wordburglar is letting his geek side show with a couple of appearances on two podcasts.

Earlier this week he appeared on G.I. Joe podcast Flag Points to talk a lot about G.I. Joe and a little bit about himself.

Flag Points - http://flagpoints.podbean.com/2012/05/12/flag-points-24/

And he also appeared on The Hex Grid with Hex and Cap to talk about 3rdburglar, his love of words, nerdcore, comics, and more G.I. Joe.

The Hex Grid - http://nerdyshow.com/2012/05/the-hex...e-wordburglar/

As a bonus, the first review is in for Wordburglar's new album 3RDBURGLAR, and it's from Toronto weekly The Grid Magazine. Respect to Chris Dart for the very good review...

Hi guys. I'm sure someone asked this before, but I'm gonna ask again :-D
I'm gonna perform a small set (15min, 3 songs) at some small pub in NYC. This is my first time performing any of my songs in front of an audience. I'm a bit nervous about freezing or flubbing lines or what have you. I wanna approach this as a stepping stone to start getting out there and doing shows and stuff, so what advice would you stage veterans have for a noob such as myself? My buddy is gonna play hype man and dance around and act a fool and such. He's also gonna be doing filler lines for me. This is gonna happen in June, so i have about a month to get ready. Anything advice would be appreciated. Thanks folks.

This release comes about partly by fault of VR for linking that damn wub machine and partly because procrastination is my motherfucking forte. About half this album comes from original Jollimus tracks, and the rest were clearly covers, because I'm awesome.

ARTIST: Sketch

ALBUM: Nightmare Man

RELEASED: 2008

GET IT: Good luck, man. I only got it because VR borrowed the CD from Sketch personally (or maybe he bought it?); Sketch says he's planning on remaking some of the tracks and putting them out, but I think he should already have the whole damn thing on Bandcamp. Anyhow, ask Sketch nicely, I guess; if he lets me, I'll maybe zip it and make it available somewhere.

PREVIOUS FAMILIARITY: I guess I couldn't be more familiar with Sketch. I have listened to and absorbed both of his recent solo releases (6 is in the House/Becoming Skeeter Valentine and The Killing Joke), the Sketch of a Monster album he did with Terry Monstrosity, his music with Mettik in both The Future and Overcast, and I've played a number of shows with him. I have hung out with him at house parties and at cipher night, he was paired with C0splay in the VPC, we've collaborated on tracks, and he's working on an album with Death*Star.

We've met.

That said, Nightmare Man is a look at who Sketch was before all of that; his early work, back when he was still finding his voice and figuring out what kind of music he even wanted to make. VR assigned it to me because he'd just recently given me a copy, and it's made for an interesting experiment as a review. In a lot of ways, the album's exactly what you'd expect -- rough around the edges, spotty, a bit hit-and-miss, less melodic and possessive of singing hooks, and perhaps filled with more bravado and less heart than his later work -- but in one really important way it is not what you'd expect.

It is not a lesser work. In fact, it contains some of the best Sketch tracks I've ever heard.

First things first: this album is a nineteen-track behemoth that showcases Sketch's vocals and production equally. It opens with the producer-track "The Beginning" (a title Sketch used again on 6 is in the House; the later song is better, but then, it's one of my absolute favorite hip-hop tracks, so I'm maybe a little biased) and cuts right into a bait-and-switch ode to horrorcore roots with "My Underground". The second track is priceless for its faux-Juggalo over-the-top intro, but it jumps into a solid track that really shows what this 2008 Sketch is made of and how hard he intends to come on this album.

Amusingly, the youthful Sketch goes with a gritty, growling delivery and an Eminem level of aggressive swagger that might make a listener dismiss the music as chest-beating posturing if it wasn't for the obvious quality in the rhymes and flow. Punches are thrown, sure, but they connect with artistry, and if it seems mildly forced it's also obvious that the tone is over-the-top by design.

Cuts like "Fallen Apart" and "Infections" bang away mercilessly, and I couldn't help but fall in love with them immediately. "Eaten Alive" is an instant favorite amongst the people I know who have heard the album, and it's beautifully done; a zombie survival tale as a metaphor for friends lost to drugs, with a folksy singer/songwriter hook that's worthy of a sing-along. Production interludes "Frankenstein" and "Ghost" are surprisingly relistenable; usually these are fly-over tracks for me and I'll cut them right off my iPod, but I actually really dig "Ghost' (which features Alfred Hitchcock reciting Shakespeare) and always chuckle at "Frankenstein" (sampling dialogue from the originalDeath Race).

There are, of course, weaker tracks; every album's got 'em, and this early work does suffer from a lower production quality than Sketch's later material (but not as much as you'd think). "Leaf Life" isn't really my thing, though Yuki may like it purely for the fact that Sketch refers to himself in the opening line as "a hip-hop hippie", and "No Mercy" is a bit overwrought, but there aren't any tracks on the album that made me roll my eyes or skip them immediately. It's more common to find tracks like "SFU" (or "Stay Fucked Up"), where I anticipated that I wouldn't really get into them because that's just not my style, but where I instead found myself bobbing my head and coming to like the track despite myself.

Sketch has a few collabs on this album from guys whose names I don't recognize -- Mith and F2U -- though I'm sort of curious of I actually do know these guys and they just don't go by those monikers anymore. One thing is readily apparent about them, though; they sound young. Sketch's snarl has its own distinctiveness, and his voice hasn't changed so much that it's unrecognizable, but the collaborators all sound like teenagers, which is a bit jarring.

Overall, I'm super-glad I got deep into this album to review it, because I've got a renewed appreciation for Sketch's talent and point-of-view. With tracks like "The Other Side" (dedicated to his deceased cousin), the aforementioned "Eaten Alive", and "The Muse", I can see how Sketch moved to more soulful tracks with his later albums, but I can also see where he gets his verve and energy for his live performances. It's a fucking great ride.

So what's my verdict? 4 out of 5, would bang. Cop this if you can; if nothing else, nag Sketch to let me leak a copy to you guys.

Hey, everybody.

I've contacted our local nerdy venue in Gainesville, FL (about an hour and a half from Orlando) about pinning down an August 2nd date. Have a couple acts showing interest in playing, and would love to have some more. Basically, come, play, the door would be split between bands, and I could provide a place to crash before caravaning down to Orlando the next day. Could be an awesome break on the road trip to NAP, and extend this to a 5 day event.

This site automatically generates dubstep remixes of music.

First I tried The Hell of It with Sketch, Shubz, and me.
http://soundcloud.com/aaron-blalack/the-hell-of-it-feat

... holy hell was that bad.

How about something more melodic, like The Quick and the Blue by the Megas?
http://soundcloud.com/aaron-blalack/the-quick-and-the-blue-wub

Not a whole lot better.

How about a dubstep remix of a Skrillex song?
http://soundcloud.com/aaron-blalack/skrillex-bangarang-ft-sirah-1

... surprisingly listenable. Especially compared to the other two.

I wanna see what you guys come up with. Remix some famous/popular songs, or remix some of your own.

I wanna see a tedley dubstep remix.

EDIT: I'd have tossed in a Death*Star song but I don't have any of the mp3s on my computer and I'm too lazy to pull them from my phone.

lyrics - annotated

The beat: Jess has fairly severe photophobia (sensitivity to light). As a result, he's rarely seen not wearing sunglasses of some kind.

3P’s a sad villain, once Prince Valiant
Cuz I’m firin torpedoes and I aim at any vent
Death*Star, known for sad villain songs. Jess once had a haircut that made him look like Prince Valiant.
... the torpedoes line is a fragment from editing where I made a reference to killing the Death Star and in my haste I didn't notice this no longer made sense.

Nose in twenty books, but he can’t get panties wet
Take my rook to his queen, yeah I’ll raise the ante bet
He reads a lot and was a notorious player for a while. "Rook" is a reference to something I'm not sure he's made public or wants made public yet.

You Dr. Orpheus? Well I’m the OutRider
Ace of hearts in my sleeve makes a full house inside her
I compared DS to the Order of the Triad in Round 3 of "Make 3P listen to nerdcore." Orpheus' wife left him for the OutRider, which I use to segue into a reference to his song Ace of Hearts and play that into a poker-hand/sex punch.

Gandalf with the magic in her privatest matters
Bilbo’s your backup, the unlikeliest rapper
Because Ace of Hearts is basically a how-to on having sex with his woman, I can work my magic like Gandalf, which leads into comparing Cos to Bilbo (whom the ring fell to--the unlikeliest of creatures).

Literary cuckold, degradin erotica
I’m ice on your dick, straight-up cold-cockin ya
The cold-cocking punch just popped in my head all of a sudden, so I used "erotica" and a ten-dollar word describing what I had just written to transition.

With Tae bo and Shaq Fu, I’m Jailhouse Rockin ya
Spittin dragon breath, “eat this Count Chocula!”
To cut a long long story short: In a fictional TV show starring C0s, 3P, and other members of the Shire, there's an episode where C0s defends earth from an alien invasion by developing his own martial art that's a combination of Tae Bo, Shaq Fu, Jailhouse Rock, the dance from Thriller, and something else.

In a game of Hunter: the Reckoning, Jess' character (think a World of Darkness version of Michael Chiklis) jumped from a moving van during the climax of the campaign (where they were all supposed to die), shoved a shotgun with Dragon's Breath rounds into the lead vampire's mouth, and screamed "EAT THIS COUNT CHOCULA" before pulling the trigger.

In this battle you’d be better off bringin your shovel
To facilitate your burial, sinkin in rubble
In the aforementioned Shire TV show, Jess' character is the greatest fighter in the world (nobody questions it) and he fights with a shovel.

I’ll dance on your grave, do the freestyle shuffle
Wanting more muffled screams, never gettin enuffle
A few ciphers ago, Klop was lit the fuck up and started doing this hilarious side-to-side swaying dance while he rapped. He also used the word "enuffle" to rhyme something which I found fuckin hilarious.

Got you trapped in a net, I’m the cur at your neck
Drag you out of Eat House, bitin’ curb in a sec
Jess' character in my D&D campaign is named Cur. Eat House is a running/inside jokes from the D&D campaign he ran for a while.

On the real you’re my homie, yeah I call you large Jess
I ain’t stingy with words, try my verbal largess
... self explanatory I guess

Your Vinnie’s old hat cuz my version’s out
Nazi Kenyan in the office cuz we crowned a kraut
Build walls with your bones, to keep Persians out
Repel them cuz you smell like a thousand trout
Fake Vinnie Paz is a popular and common game played at cipher night.

Also, the first truly memorable Fake Vinnie Paz was freestyled by Jess the night we came up with it: "I BUILT GIZA IN A DAY, YOU CAN'T FIGURE ME OUT / I HIT YOU WITH THE PASSION OF A THOUSAND TROUT"

the last 8 bars
3P is known to be rather... verbose.

Honestly, the fact that the last 8 ended up saying anything at all was a complete accident. I'd intended to say a lot of words without saying anything besides maybe "I'm good at rapping, you're not" or even less if possible. Welp;
