• Death*Star - A New Dope

C0splay, Bill Beats, and MC-3PO present A New Dope, the follow-up to 2010’s The Fandom Menace. A year and a half of blood, sweat, spilled alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, battery acid, and saliva has gone into creating a nerdcore masterpiece universally and lazily hailed as “dope” by the Death*Starmy. Featuring collaborations from Klopfenpop, Kyle Stevens (of Kirby Krackle), Sk3tch (formerly of The Future), and Brittany Dixon, the Nerdcore Battlestation tackles topics from robot uprisings and video game drug dealers to swag hoarding and sex with various members of your family (yes, your family).

Get some Death*Star in your bloodstream and experience the next evolution of dope.

      Sounds dope on first inspection.

I'm gonna give it more of a listen in coming weeks.

      I'm kidding, it's probably pretty good. /listening.

So far I have to say I enjoy the skits on average more than the songs (especially the non-acting from Bill Beats and the unabashed name dropping of Nerdcore artists) - they are just too hilarious, but the songs are quite great as well. "Your Mom" is brilliantly wrong in all the right ways. "Sixteen Tons" pretty much completely destroys the need for any Nerdcore act to ever rap about exactly what nerd merch they own ever again. I also enjoy that some songs still have signature 40 second+ Death*Star intros. I should've been on the production and a guest verse for "Robot Dance Party Revolution" or should at least remix it ;)

I'd rate it a solid B, with potential for improvement on repeat listens.

The final cut of the intro is fucking hilarious!

Rocking this on my weirdly long commute from Bothell to Federal Way this morning. :/

Oh you guys. You guys and your majestic majesty.
Also I've listened to the intro to The Devils You Know a few times, and I'm pretty sure it says "grab your duck". Sold.

By the way, that album cover? Sexy as FUCK.

      EDIT:

Okay seriously I'm loving this album. I unironically love the shit out of every ridiculous fucking second that is Robot Dance Party Revolution, especially that autotuned "oooOOOOOoo"

I love that Sketch hella namedrops me in Respiration Exhale. And that 3P gives Shubz some love too :D

The skits are all hilarious, it's great to hear the final versions after having basically seen almost all of them take shape from start to finish (practically). The final version of Your Mom is hilarious and great of course, and has a special place in my heart, since I got a demo of the rough just over a year ago when you guys first wrote it (and it helped me laugh during a difficult time :) )

Good job guys. Looking forward to your other upcoming releases. All in all this album's been a huge leap up from Fandom Menace (and we won't speak of the one beforehand)

I noticed a sample by the doors on your collab with Klop, just curious if that is a cleared sample?

      That's not a sample, it's totally re-created in studio.

If it were real, I imagine catching a glimpse of the Death Star from Star Wars would be pretty daunting. Similar to, let's say... a reviewer staring at his iTunes, gulping, and realising he's committed himself to a twenty track monster.

Death*Star are, MC3PO, COsplay and Bill Beats. And all signs point to an album stuffed with Star Wars references, right? Death*Star, A New Dope, MC3PO! Right? I mean... I didn't make those Star Wars references in the build up for nothing... did I?

The introduction (Intro To A New Dope) is in the form of a skit and it's genuinely funny. In contrast, the first song, 'Broken Robots', featuring Kyle Stevens, starts out gently before distorted bass builds to an interesting, industrial soundscape. Clever effects on the vocals indicate an attention to detail in the production and the chorus exhibits pop sensibilities which remain through the middle-eight.

Led by a cheeky guitar riff, 'Milk Money' passes by without much incident, giving way to 'Any Girl'. With a hint of jazz/funk about it, 'Any Girl' is bass led and features the vocals of Brittany Dixon. Whilst the beautiful harmonies of ms Dixon are a joy to behold, the rapping doesn't always achieve the same standard. The laid back groove works but at times the lyrics feel a touch clumsy. That aside I'm impressed and surprised by the musical diversity on show with just three songs played.

No significant Star Wars references yet...

'Facebook Friendless' is another skit which references some of the names you'll hear regularly on The Nerdcore Meow podcast. Chadley, Jake-bit and Stiborg are all honoured with a namecheck.

'Social Apothecary' seems to have been kicking around for an age after appearing on Nerdcore Now Vol1 last year. An understated guitar riff wanders through the track while vocal accompaniment and subtle whistling add to the atmosphere created by laid back raps and a sung chorus reminiscent of something you might hear in a twisted fairy tale.
